Highcliffe Music Community Project - A celebration of music-making in our schools

Highcliffe School is joining with seven primary schools in a community event that celebrates music for all. From school choirs to concert bands, jazz to pop, formally trained to the just plain enthusiastic, our community of schools work hard to provide opportunities for young people of all ages and abilities to engage in music-making as part of their education experience. Supported by the music hub SoundStorm this collaboration is part of an initiative helping young musicians to continue their passion and pursuit of music beyond primary and into secondary school through the music scholarship scheme at Highcliffe School.

All proceeds from this event will go directly to young people through this scheme and fund instrumental lessons for the keen musician.

Legends of Irish music and song, The Fureys are renowned for their hit songs I Will Love You, When You Were Sweet 16, The Green Fields of France, The Old Man, Red Rose Café, From Clare to Here, Her Father Didn't Like me Anyway, Leaving Nancy, Steal Away and more.

The oldest of the brothers, Eddie Furey left home in 1966 and travelled to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival where with his brother Finbar, he met and shared accommodation with then unknown folk singers Billy Connolly, Gerry Rafferty, Tam Harvey and Alex Campbell.

In 1972, Gerry Rafferty wrote Her Father Didn't Like me Anyway for Eddie. BBC Radio 1 presenter, the late John Peel made it his single of the year.

They are particularly proud of their UK chart success with songs such as I Will Love You and When You Were Sweet Sixteen, which in turn helped bring Irish folk and traditional music to a completely new audience. The band made their Top of the Pops debut in 1981.

Eddie Furey recalls how "many musicians have told us we influenced them after hearing a record from their parents or grandparents' collection". Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics has credited Eddie with teaching him his first chords on the guitar while still a teenager. Eddie would return the compliment by joining Dave on stage in Paris for a jam during the latter's wedding to Bananarama's Siobhan Fahey.

Their emotive songs stir many emotions, tears and laughter, sadness and joy.

Once called The Loners, Dennis Hopper co-wrote, directed, and starred in the Oscar-nominated biker flick about two men riding motorcycles from Los Angeles to New Orleans to Florida during the tumult of the Vietnam-era '60s. Sensuous contemporary ballet meets the energy of musical theatre in four distinctive short works. Fool's Paradise, The Two of Us, Us, An American in Paris: four works showing the remarkable choreographic range of The Royal Ballet's Artistic Associate, Christopher Wheeldon.

FOOL'S PARADISE
Luminescent and shimmering, Fool's Paradise marked the first of Wheeldon's many collaborations with composer Joby Talbot. It was created in 2007 for Wheeldon's own company, Morphoses, and first performed in 2012 by The Royal Ballet.

THE TWO OF US
The wistful songs of Joni Mitchell set the scene for the UK premiere of The Two of Us, a duet of deep intimacy and yearning. It was created in 2020 for the Fall for Dance Festival in New York, and had American ballet dancers Sarah Mearns and David Hallberg in its original cast.

Us is a tender duet danced by two men. It was created in 2017 for BalletBoyz and is set to Keaten Henson's music.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (BALLET)

"Yeomen", subtitled 'The Merryman and His Maid', was the 11th of the Savoy Operettas, premiered in October 1888 and ran for 423 performances. It is set in the Tower of London during King Henry VIII's reign and is the most emotionally engaging of all their works. Critics considered the score to be Sullivan's finest and the libretto contains considerable humour. The plot is quite intricate but the complexities are all finally and cleverly resolved.

This will be a traditional production of "The Yeomen of the Guard" and one which we feel will bring fun and entertainment to the whole family. Skilfully directed by Adam Davies and David Sandham, last year’s very successful team, the show will be accompanied by a talented 16-piece orchestra under the skilled hands of musical director and conductor Ieuan Davies.
