There is already a buzz of Oscar about Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance in this sumptuous production based on the novel by Colette.  Directed by Stephen Frears it is set in 1920s Paris.  Pfeiffer is an ageing but still beautiful courtesan who begins an affair with the 19 year old son, Cheri (Rupert Friend) of one of her greatest rivals, Kathy Bates.  However, when Bates organises Cheri’s marriage to a nubile 18 year old, Pfeiffer’s world crumbles.  Pfeiffer got her first Oscar nomination for Dangerous Liaisons and in Cheri she surely has another chance with a performance that rivals that of Glenn Close in the earlier film.
