Legends of Irish music and song, The Fureys are renowned for their hit songs I Will Love You, When You Were Sweet 16, The Green Fields of France, The Old Man, Red Rose Café, From Clare to Here, Her Father Didn't Like me Anyway, Leaving Nancy, Steal Away and more.

The oldest of the brothers, Eddie Furey left home in 1966 and travelled to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival where with his brother Finbar, he met and shared accommodation with then unknown folk singers Billy Connolly, Gerry Rafferty, Tam Harvey and Alex Campbell.

In 1972, Gerry Rafferty wrote Her Father Didn't Like me Anyway for Eddie. BBC Radio 1 presenter, the late John Peel made it his single of the year.

They are particularly proud of their UK chart success with songs such as I Will Love You and When You Were Sweet Sixteen, which in turn helped bring Irish folk and traditional music to a completely new audience. The band made their Top of the Pops debut in 1981.

Eddie Furey recalls how "many musicians have told us we influenced them after hearing a record from their parents or grandparents' collection". Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics has credited Eddie with teaching him his first chords on the guitar while still a teenager. Eddie would return the compliment by joining Dave on stage in Paris for a jam during the latter's wedding to Bananarama's Siobhan Fahey.

Their emotive songs stir many emotions, tears and laughter, sadness and joy.

FOOL'S PARADISE
Luminescent and shimmering, Fool's Paradise marked the first of Wheeldon's many collaborations with composer Joby Talbot. It was created in 2007 for Wheeldon's own company, Morphoses, and first performed in 2012 by The Royal Ballet.

THE TWO OF US
The wistful songs of Joni Mitchell set the scene for the UK premiere of The Two of Us, a duet of deep intimacy and yearning. It was created in 2020 for the Fall for Dance Festival in New York, and had American ballet dancers Sarah Mearns and David Hallberg in its original cast.

US (DUET)
Us is a tender duet danced by two men. It was created in 2017 for BalletBoyz and is set to Keaten Henson's music.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (BALLET)
The Royal Ballet celebrates Wheeldon's extraordinary success in musical theatre by performing the ballet scene from his Tony Award-winning musical An American in Paris. Set to Gershwin's jazzy melodies, the musical is inspired by the 1951 film of the same name starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The musical went on to win four Tony awards. The full musical depicts a blossoming romance between the American G.I. Jerry Mulligan and a French ballerina, Lise Dassin. The ballet excerpt was Wheeldon's take on one of the most memorable scenes from the film, an extended sequence in which the two central characters dance through Paris.

"Yeomen", subtitled 'The Merryman and His Maid', was the 11th of the Savoy Operettas, premiered in October 1888 and ran for 423 performances. It is set in the Tower of London during King Henry VIII's reign and is the most emotionally engaging of all their works. Critics considered the score to be Sullivan's finest and the libretto contains considerable humour. The plot is quite intricate but the complexities are all finally and cleverly resolved.

This will be a traditional production of "The Yeomen of the Guard" and one which we feel will bring fun and entertainment to the whole family. Skilfully directed by Adam Davies and David Sandham, last year’s very successful team, the show will be accompanied by a talented 16-piece orchestra under the skilled hands of musical director and conductor Ieuan Davies.

SIMON YATES – PLEASURE & PAIN

‘Touching the Void’ mountaineer, Simon Yates, is a veteran of over eighty expeditions to high/remote mountains around the globe and shows no signs of slowing down. This is his story of the last decade, of new adventures and climbs in the far north and south, along with summits in South America, Central Asia and the Himalaya.

In 2023, Simon travelled with legendary British mountaineer Mick Fowler to attempt the un-climbed north face of Patkhor in Tajikistan, but contracted food poisoning from their freeze-dried food on just the second day. After some debate, they continued, but this was just the beginning of a series of events that would see them run out of food, retreat below the summit in a storm and Simon taking a bone-breaking 100m fall during the descent. After two days of lying on the glacier waiting for a helicopter, rescuers finally arrived but were unable to carry Simon down. Somehow, he would need to summon the energy for the painful three day walk to safety.
